Hello ! I'm new here but not new in swimming. I decided to open a new topics about "Mixed stroke - kick styles and non-olympic swimming styles", because swimming means first of all the pleasure to discover the connection with water, to experiment new type of propulsion in water and finnaly an analytical improvement for standard swimming style. I propose for starting point for discusion your opinions about the half / full side stroke and alterantives with above water recovery of leading arm, and second point of view about the double-advantages of combined crawl stroke- dolphin kick style (1 or 2 kicks / stroke) in obtaining a good body rotation for freestyle and rhythm for butterfly style. I challenge you to tell here your experience about other mixed stroke-kick style and non-olympic style of swimming. I hope you find this topic interesting. Thanks, Bogdan |

What about butterfly with a breaststroke kick... does this follow this line of thinking? |

OMG, that's like the two things I'm worst at in the pool combined into one. Horrible vision! |

Not sure about other countries but pretty sure fly with breast kick is still legal in Masters comps in Australia. A few swimmers in my club do it for our National Aerobic Trophy where 400 and 800 Fly are part of the program. I did the whole program one year (a few years back now) - you have to do (among other swims) 5 x 400 and 5 x 800 Flys, each of those sets of 5 in a different calendar month. You end up with a pretty good level of fitness if you do the whole program. The Fly swims nearly killed me; did them with a normal fly kick. Have tried fly with breast kick but feels awkward to me. I think possibly it enables swimmers with compromised shoulder flexibility (but a strong breast kick) to clear the water on the arm recovery. But that may be only part of the story. Like other things in life - :) - don't knock it until you try it.. |

I understand this topic seems to be so strange and mixed styles apears so complicated, but the development of capacities of displacement through water depends of autonomy and coordination between arms and legs and the principles of hydrodynamics are the same. I know that many of the swimmers discover only for a few year how to swim. I wanted to draw your attention that there are not only four ways to swim. Many of swimmers want to be only freestyle swimmers, and to perfectionate crawl style is the main purpose they have. Maybe in the future I will prepare some movies to demonstrate the graceful and the efficiency of other styles.
Thanks |

One member of our club uses a scissor-type kick in freestyle - he's always towards the front of the lane. |

Hi Dan! A fun topic. Did you ever try backstroke with dolphin kick, one, two or three per armstroke. It is like dancing and bouncing joyfully in the water... |
|

Backstroke can be combine with dolphin kick and breast kick especially with double armstroke (simultaneous arms-stroke) to train the kicks. The difference is the adjustment hips joints, that it should be positioning in hyperextension. Is is a good method to develop streching for quadriceps femuralis muscle and a good amplitude given by hips in fly kick. The combination can also develops the arch position of lower back, very important adjustament to raise the legs in free style for example. Thank you |

Hi Dan! Do you actually have experienced all the things you are talking about? It seems like you are talking out of a book. I hope you have some fun and joy with swimming!! Good luck and fun with the discovery of new strokes!! |

Hi Reemi ! I did't want to be too sofisticated. Maybe it may not seems I'm talking out of a book, (as I promise in the previous message: "Maybe in the future I should prepare some movies to demonstrate the graceful and the efficiency of other styles"), I should keep my word. If you are suspicous at what I said why not try it ? If I did not make me to be undestood, why do you not ask me what are you are interested about ? If you're just curious to know if I experienced what I said - YES I DO ! Actualy majority of swimmers are too rigid indoctrinated in ideal swimming pattern, and to be Michael Phelps in person, so they forget to discover the swimming and their own style of swimming, more then to imitate other. So just try and tell me if you did ! Good luck! |
