Rest And Holidays

Hi,

I'm keen to understand how much rest and holiday times top swimmers should get? The reason is that my son is just turned 16 and has great potential - 100m Breaststroke 1.03.85

But his coach has put pressure on my wife to have him not take any holidays which to me seems counter-intuitive, ie, doesen't everyone need a break?

In the last year he has had 2 weeks holiday and thats it. I am not a pro swimmer but I imagine even the top swimmers have a few weeks off a few times a year.

What's usual?

cheers
Tony

Given the lack of replies I would say the answer is that everyone has all of August Off as a Holiday :-)

We do have 3 weeks break in April (mine is in July becasue I have a different main event). However we should listen to your coach. He/ she knows best what your kid needs for his swimming. If he says no rest, have no rest.

Thats correct,...Juliette kept training during the hollidays,...not as intens but still...If the swimmer has potential he has to saty working. And if training is fun that should'nt be a problem...

Rest also depends on intensity levels of current training. Because my club only do 3 sessions (the swimmers work hard when in the water) we actually do more during the summer 'break' in the UK, by hiring a different pool (a change is as good as a rest!) and giving a quality session for swimmers who have supported the programme of training during the year. This is in addition to the other 3 sessions, not as a replacement for any fo those 3. As a result at our first meet in September we are relatively fitter than our oppostion compared to normal
