swimming basics (Posted by Jeff)

Hi sganensan
i just got back to UK, spent 10 days in Malta, there you can swim in 4 feet of water and out over 35metres deep in a matter of a few strokes, its all in the mind, you must be confident with your own ability to swim and stay afloat at any depth of water.
start by just floating in a comfortable depth, tell you mind its deeper water, then go deeper.
you can do it, trust me, its all in the mind.

Butterfly Entry (Posted by Juliette)

I agree with GW!!....back to the basic. Also a lot of ondulation should be build in. I tell the swimmers to use their hips more,...as specially the youngsters like it when I say to get their butts up instead of hips.(the Dad)

"Uncorrectable" form causing constant shoulder pain (Posted by SwimMom77)

If it helps - my 11 year has had a similar problem. Things that have helped:

LOTS of warm up and cool down
Ice the shoulder immediately after a workout and twice more in the day.
Get a physio therapist to look at it and give strengthening excercises with therabands.
Work on drills to improve the form

"Uncorrectable" form causing constant shoulder pain (Posted by wonderboy)

The first thing I would look at is her head position. I haven't really run into many kids with shoulder pain, but when I have, it's usually due to poor head position.

The group is too young for the swimmer and he needs to add challenge into the sets (Posted by Windrath)

My initial reply is stay with your peer group and do the following:

a) Increase your intensity,
b) Increase the amount of time you spend underwater off the turns
c) Reduce your strokes per length
d) Change your breathing pattern
e) Do strokes other than freestyle
f) Make sure you are using a 6 be kick, kicking up and down on fly, 6 beat kick on back

Too often, the practice is about the interval when it should be all about technique.

Good Luck.

The group is too young for the swimmer and he needs to add challenge into the sets (Posted by chris)

My experience on this is from BMX racing with my 2 boys. Danny wears the #1 Plate on his bike for the state of CT. He cannot compete with anybody older than 6. So he practices with 10 year old's who give him a good ride. Change up the practice and add your son into the older age group. I'm sure the coach would have no problem with it. Good Job! Swim on!!

What should a 14 year old boy do when his group needs swim times that are as much as 15 seconds slower than what he needs? How does he alter the sets they are given to add strength and power and speed?

"Uncorrectable" form causing constant shoulder pain (Posted by GW)

Ok, so try swimming on the side with outstretched hand pointing straight down the line of swim, head sighting up the other arm pointing directly to the ceiling ('L' drill). When you can balance down the whole length on each arm, go to a 12 kick switch, pulling hard with the outstretched arm right round to the 'L' drill position on the opposite side. The recovering arm needs to come down onto the water, again pointing strainght down the line of swim. Gradually reduce the number of kicks to move eventually to rhythmn backstroke with rotation. Makes the swimmer concentrate on keeping straight and if over reaching the swimmer will tend to zig zag

thanks for your reply. no, she does not have hyper-mobility issues. her coaches are encouraging her to do that, but she does not seem to be able to make it happen.
