Swim Pic of the Week - November 19, 2009

Posted by Glenn Mills on Nov 19, 2009 08:45AM (1,936 views)

In looking for more and more fun ways to train, last week we showed the bands that we carry in the swim bag... this week, it's something just a bit larger.  The question is, have you ever tried a Monofin?

PS: the bubbles look like scales. He's now officially a mermaid :)

Yes, I actually do finswimming competitively. Don't get me wrong but most of the Finis monofins are actually not real monofins (expect for the Competitor model).

Anyway, ever since I started with finswimming I loved it. People think it's easy to go fast with a mono but there's a lot more to it than just going fast. As swimming, finswimming is a highly technical sport where little details can make a huge difference.

Sprinter... she'll be happy to hear you think she's a dude. :) Red... I do have the competitor. IT'S HUGE! And you're right... very tough to go fast.

Yes, tried it. It made me feel a little claustrophobic at first... or panic'd that I might need air and not be able to get to the surface in the old familiar ways. But once I got over that, it was a lot of fun and a great ab workout -- also lower back.

For our Masters team, when we do station workouts the Monofin is often one of the stations and swimmers love it.

Wow the competitor is huge alright.

Do these gadets increase ankle flexibility? That's what I need help with

Responded Nov 19, 2009 05:11PM

Look like fun indeed - no, I hasn't try it before

Responded Nov 19, 2009 10:04PM

Yes Steve. Over time, they'll certainly increase ankle flexibility, as well as teach you how to flow through the water better.

Oh, sorry. I first thought it is a girl but couldn't see upper part of the swim suit, so I prefer to do less damage and risk to call a girl a dude than calal a dude a girl :D. My apologies!!!

Responded Nov 20, 2009 06:52AM

calal = call

Sorry about misspelling!

Responded Nov 20, 2009 11:18AM

No apology necessary. I told you, she's gonna be happy about that. :)

Responded Nov 20, 2009 11:33AM

I thought you mean it sarcastically. OK, then I take my apologies back! :D ;)

Our club has a couple that we sometimes try out. Pretty fun :D

@Glenn, I do like the Competitior because it's a flexible and soft one. Perfect for practice because otherwise your feet won't make it through an 1.5 hour workout. But I need something bigger for meets so I can build up more speed. Also, a good tip is to apply some soap on your feet before using the mono.
